Alison Kock
Marine Biologist, SOSF Shark Centre
Alison is a qualified marine biologist with a passion for sharks. After graduating from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, she spent three years working as a field biologist and tour guide for a shark eco-tourism operation and then as a game ranger for an award winning wilderness reserve in the heart of the Cedarberg mountains.
Alison became involved with SOSF early on when her research on white sharks became one of six inaugural projects funded by SOSF. Her honours & masters degrees focused on the hunting strategies of great white sharks in False Bay, Cape Town and she is currently completing her PhD on the behavioural ecology of white sharks. Alison has published her work in peer-reviewed journals, presented at international conferences and regularly commits time to popularizing her science in the print and visual media. She is a qualified diver and boat skipper.
Alison has recently been appointed marine biologist for the Save Our Seas Shark Centre, and is a member of the City of Cape Town’s Shark Working Group, which works closely with Cape Town’s Shark Spotters, a pro-active initiative to reduce the risk of shark encounters; something that is essential to continued shark conservation in Cape Town. Alison is also 1 of the 3 Shark Angels in an alliance with SOSF, the Sea Shepard Conservation Society and Shark Savers. For Alison, understanding sharks and their importance in marine ecosystems through scientific research and then relating that back into meaningful conservation and management measures is what continues to drive her.
