London Aquarium

L1000372The London Aquarium (LA) is in a fantastic location at the very heart of London and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, including school groups on a daily basis. LA is committed to marine conservation, running its own projects and also putting a lot of effort into educating its visitors as to the importance of preserving the marine environment.

Over the past few months, the aquarium has undergone a major re-vamp, with lots of new exhibits and displays being installed. SOSF has had a great affiliation with the aquarium for a couple of years, and now we’ve been give the opportunity to expand upon this affiliation by installing educational displays in two different rooms.

SASC Bull Shark Expedition – SOSF Lends a helping hand

A bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) named Nyami nyami (after the Zambezi river god) grabbed media headlines a few weeks ago because it set two records: namely she is recorded as the world record (4 m) size bull shark and secondly because she was caught in an estuary 400 km further south than the previous area bull sharks are known to occur. SOSF funded the latest expedition and a pop-up archival satellite tag and Morne’ and I were there to lend a hand.

SOSSC Sevengill Shark Photo-ID – New Project

We have initiated a new research project focused on a population of sevengill sharks (Notorynchus cepedianus) in False Bay, South Africa. We are evaluating the population structure of these sharks in an aggregation site and documenting social behaviour using underwater observations documented by video and photography. This project forms part of a larger collaborative study in development with the South African Shark Conservancy.

Rethink the Shark and Riddle in a Bottle win at the IWFF

It has been announced that SOSF’s Rethink the Shark has won the Best Advertising/PSA/Promo award in the Best of Category Awards ahead of this year’s International Wildlife Film Festival, the world’s longest running wildlife film festival which takes place in Missoula, Montana next month. Riddle in a Bottle, produced by the SOSF supported Sisbro Studios, was also awarded Best Children’s Program, along with a Merit Award for Script.

Rethink the Shark had previously won a presitious Panda award at the Wildscreen Film Festival while Riddle in a Bottle recently picked up Best Children’s Film at the Wild and Scenic Film Festival.
