  • White sharks killed in shark nets off South Africa

Having just published the previous post, I am grieved to learn that on August 31st a large female white shark (4.37m) weighing 900kg was caught in a shark net off Zinkwazi beach on the KwaZulu Natal coast of South Africa. Only two days later a second female white shark (3.95m) weighing 722kg was also found dead in the shark nets.

The unfortuante deaths of these already endangered sharks serves to exacerbate the contentious issue of nets being used to protect recreational beach users along the coast of South Africa.

To learn more about the shark nets of South Africa, please check out SOSF Chief Photographer Tom Peschak’s comprehensive commentary on the issue here.
