Project Leader: Dr Leonard Compagno

Background

Through the development of scientific research gathered both globally and at the new SOSF Shark research laboratory it is hoped to further uncover the mysteries behind shark anatomy and behaviour. The information gathered by Leonard for the SOSF will be shared with respected scientists and organizations at conferences and seminars and through jointly authored publications and papers.

Aims & objectives

  1. Complete the production of Sharks of the World volume 1 and 3 and finish a chapter for the Fishes of the Indian Ocean book.
  2. Collaboration with publications and manuscripts of many species of marina life found Eastern Central Atlantic from Basking sharks, Thresher sharks, Nurse sharks, Whale sharks to Megamouth and Mako sharks.
  3. Review and describe new species including the three new species of Manta rays discovered by SOSF project leader Andrea Marshall; the description of two new species Rynchobatus in the Western Pacific; description of a new Galeus Catshark and Gollum finback Catshark both from the Philippines and the Carcharhinus requiem shark from the South China Sea.
