The Wavescapes Film Festival is known to be the premier surf-culture event in South Africa, screening the best surfing films from around the world in cinemas and incredible outdoor locations, including the “most beautiful cinema in the world”, on Cape Town’s Clifton 4th beach. The festival also showcases a charity art exhibition, at which South Africa’s top artists decorate surfboards which are then auctioned off to raise money for marine focused charities.
At present there are limited conservation education initiatives that are aimed specifically at the surfing community. The Wavescapes Film Festival therefore represents an amazing opportunity for SOSF to reach out to those who already have an enormous amount invested in the protection of the oceans. SOSF is in a prime position to challenge some of the misinformation and established perceptions about the threats facing the marine environment with a vibrant community that engages with the oceans everyday.
