Shark Conservation Consortium

Aims

Following from an initial set of discussions initiated in May, 2007, the Fisheries Conservation Foundation and SOSF developed and signed a Memorandum Of Understanding in 2008 forming the  SOSF-FCF Shark Conservation Consortium to serve as a focal point for the two foundations to develop a variety of joint activities, including the following:

FCF and SOSF are having continuing discussion with the Bahamian Government to design and implement an education/outreach project in the Bahamas that would use the ongoing SOSF-supported shark conservation research being conducted at the Cape Eleuthera Institute as a focal point for educating Bahamian students and training Bahamian teachers about shark conservation needs.

Looking to the Future

FCF and SOSF are jointly supporting the development of a pilot for a new public television series called OCEAN, which involves award-winning scientist, Dr. Carl Safina from the Blue Ocean Institute, and acclaimed producer, John Angier.  The objective of the series is to explore the mysteries of ocean life, the global challenges facing the seas, and the solutions needed to ensure their survival.

FCF and SOSF have also formed an informal coalition to try to help Middle Eastern Governments develop more conservation-oriented coastal development practices.  The Arabian Coastal Alliance (ACA) met in London in March 2008 with the environmental engineering firms that are involved in designing the five economic cities planned for development in Saudi Arabia.  We agreed to work together to develop a message to send to the Saudi Government and Royal Family offering our experience and knowledge to help in their efforts.  Through the efforts of Michael Philipp from FCF and Chris Clarke from SOSF, a mini-documentary produced by SOSF that defines the issues surrounding coastal development in the region has been distributed to key individuals involved in various aspects of the overall construction.
