Protecting Sharks: Reducing Demand Through Consumer Education

Background

Having already successfully worked together in the past, SOSF and WildAid will continue to partner each other to foster greater protection for sharks through CITES and national legislation, while continuing a program of public service announcements and media events that will reach an estimated 500 million viewers in China and across Asia to reduce the increasing demand for shark fin soup. In addition, there is a specific aim to launch a joint international campaign with SOSF to reduce the consumption of shark finning by highlighting the dangers to human health of mercury ingestion via shark fin soup.

Aims & objectives

WildAid and SOSF aim to launch a joint international campaign to reduce the consumption of shark fin by highlighting the dangers to human health of mercury ingestion via shark fin soup. WildAid seeks to publish a peer reviewed paper on mercury contamination produced for it by the ALS Laboratory Group and Hong Kong Baptist University that provides clear evidence of the contamination of shark fin with Methylmercury and the potential health threats to humans from the consumption of shark fin soup. In addition to the detailed scientific report, WildAid will also produce a short, easily accessible report that will reach a non-science audience. This will be accompanied by a video news release and clip reel for use a press conferences and in news and features media.
