The Dugongs of Abu Dhabi
Dugong

Background

Hundreds of dugongs (Dugong dugon) congregate each year in the warm coastal waters of the Arabian Gulf, off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, to graze on the vast acres of sea grass that grow there, earning them the common name of ‘sea cows’. Dugongs are the only herbivorous marine mammal and the preservation of their sea grass habitats is vital to their survival. The UAE has now established conservation, education and public awareness programs to help protect the dugong population and their habitats.
