Saatchi & Saatchi, Cape Town, the internationally recognised, multi-award winning ad agency responsible for our Rethink the Shark campaign, and assisted by Lesley Rochat of the SOS Shark Centre, have come up with another unique campaign, The Oceans Speak Out. The campaign consists of specific elements (see below), each a direct appeal for help from those who find them while walking on the beach. The aim of the campaign is to educate the public about the alarming decline in marine life by literally giving the ocean and its inhabitants a voice. The campaign will roll out over three days from 24 May on Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town, South Africa.
No matter where in the world we live the oceans are our life support system, they govern climates, absorb carbon dioxide, provide the oxygen we breathe, the fresh water we drink, as well as being a source of medicine and protein for millions of people. But our oceans are suffering due to relentless negative human impact caused by pollution, climate change, habitat destruction and overfishing. Scientific reports warn us that if the current rate of exploitation of our marine resources continues then there will be no fish left by the year 2050. Many animals are being driven to extinction, and large predatory species such as specific shark species have declined by 90%.
Most people are unaware of the plight of our oceans and a campaign like this aims to raise awareness in a compelling way by giving the ocean a voice that reaches out and directs people to proactively take action to help us Save Our Seas.

The Oceans Speak Out Awareness Campaign - Day 1: When we see a beautiful shell on the beach we will pick it up to admire it, and perhaps if it is big enough we will hold it to our ear to listen to the soothing hush of the sea. Today those walking on a beach in Cape Town, South Africa, were pleasantly surprised to find that these shells were different, they had a voice.
The Ocean Speaks Out Awareness Campaign - Day 2: The sun begins to rise, surfers are out to catch the early morning wave and early risers stroll down the beach. Bottles wash up on the shore. These are different to the many that litter our shores, they have a message inside, each beautifully written by one of the oceans creatures such as Greg the Great White, imploring us to change our ways and help save our oceans.
The Ocean Speak Out Awareness Campaign - Day 3: The coffin tumbles through the surf, the tide pulls out and leaves it resting on the beach, bathed in the early morning amber sunlight. It naturally draws the attention of many people, concerned of course. They inquisitively walk up to the coffin, who could be in it? To their surprise they find a message on a plaque, another plea to us to help Save Our Seas which reads: "Every minute 208 dolphins drown in fishing nets. Be part of the solution."
